1. one of the districts into which a state of the United States (except Louisiana and Alaska) is divided for purposes of local government. These purposes may include taxes, courts, public works and maintenance, education, and health regulation. The county is the political unit next below the state. Abbr: Co.
2. one of the districts into which Great Britain and Ireland are divided for administrative, judicial, and political purposes. The counties were formed as a result of historical events.
3. one of the larger divisions of land for administrative purposes in certain British Commonwealth countries.
